Orange rebounds from early losses with 6-0 second half in 10-3 win over No. 16 Towson

No. 7 Syracuse (3-2) used a dominant 6-0 second half to beat No. 16 Towson (1-4) by a score of 10-3 on Saturday in Towson, Md.

For the first time all season, Syracuse scored first in a game. The Orange jumped out to a 3-0 lead midway through the first half, courtesy of goals from Kailah Kempney, Devon Collins and Michelle Tumolo.

In response, the Tigers used a 3-1 run over the last 11:28 of the first half to cut the gap to one goal at halftime. But Laura Zinkand’s goal with 2:59 remaining in the first period was the last one Towson would score on Saturday.

Syracuse’s Kayla Treanor scored in the first minute out of the break to extend SU’s lead, and the Orange never looked back. Collins, Treanor, and Tumolo each contributed two goals and an assist, and midfielder Amy Cross also netted a pair of scores as Syracuse averted a losing streak.

The Orange defense responded aggressively in its first game since allowing 14 goals to Florida last Saturday. SU limited Towson to just 13 shots, forced 25 turnovers and the Tigers were only successful on 11-of-23 clear attempts.

Syracuse switched up its two-goalie system on Saturday, giving Kelsey Richardson her first career start and relieving her with Alyssa Costantino, the usual starter, in the second half. Richardson made two saves and earned the win, while Costantino recorded four stops and didn’t relinquish a goal in her 30 minutes in the cage.

The Orange has 13 days off before it opens Big East play on March 22 against Connecticut at home.
