APPreciation: Pocket Pup woos dog lovers young, old

Even though “Puppy Bowl Sunday” is over, don’t worry dog lovers: There’s an app for you.

Pocket Pup is similar to the beloved Giga Pets game of the 90s generation, but this pup is arguably more fun to play with, and the game itself is much more interactive. With a few simple swipes of the index finger, users can take their puppy through doggy obedience training and teach the brown and white spotted virtual puppy to sit, fetch and play dead.

Even though the App Store markets Pocket Pup to children with the description “Let your kids experience all the fun and excitement of a puppy for FREE,” there is no denying that this game was made for audiences that include those who are kids at heart.

Because truly, what is cuter than watching a puppy ride on a skateboard? Or tickling its belly after it eats a large ice cream sundae? Or covering it with soap bubbles and drying it off with a hair dryer?

After passing obedience training, the next step of the game is filling out a picture book with snapshots of the puppy performing certain commands. Pocket Pup users should think of this task as the work of a proud parent, such as one would fill out a baby book with pictures.

With large brown eyes, a short, yippy bark and an eager, wagging tail, this virtual puppy will give users of all ages instant puppy love — just in time for Valentine’s Day.
