Former Syracuse star, current Cavaliers guard Waiters selected for BBVA Rising Stars Challenge

Former Syracuse star and current Cleveland Cavaliers guard Dion Waiters was selected to play in the 2013 BBVA Rising Stars Challenge in Houston on Feb. 15. The game is a part of the NBA All-Star Weekend.

Waiters has played in 38 games and averages 14.5 points per game. That’s good for second among NBA rookies. He’s also averaging 2.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. Waiters has drained 49 3-pointers this season, surpassing his total of 41 from a season ago at Syracuse.

The Cavaliers selected Waiters with the fourth overall pick of the NBA Draft last June.

Waiters was one of the best sixth men in the country for Syracuse last season. He averaged 12.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, and shot 36.3 percent from the arc.

Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal will each draft a team of nine players for the Rising Stars Challenge. Both teams will be composed of NBA rookies and second-year players.

The game will be on TNT at 9 p.m. on Feb. 15.
