Conference Realignment

Boise State not joining Big East for football, will remain in Mountain West Conference

Boise State will not be joining the Big East after all, ESPN reports.

The Broncos were scheduled to join the Big East as a football-only member beginning in 2013, but sources told ESPN that BSU will remain a member of the Mountain West Conference.

The Big East has had 14 schools announce they are leaving the conference in the last two years. With the Broncos’ defection, the Big East is left with 11 football schools for 2013.

What remains to be seen, though, is what impact – if any – BSU’s departure will have on the future of San Diego State in the Big East. The Aztecs, who are also a member of the MWC, have repeatedly expressed their commitment to the Big East, but will now be left as the only team in the conference west of the Rocky Mountains, meaning that they can now leave the Big East without paying an exit fee.
