The Carrier Dome will undergo visual enhancements this summer, as a 360-degree ribbon display and multiple LED video boards will be installed in the 33-year-old venue.

‘This is something we have been working to acquire for some time,’ Syracuse University Athletic Director Daryl Gross said in an SU Athletics news release. ‘The new video and ribbon boards will add to the fan experience in the most spectacular way, enhancing live game viewing significantly beyond a family room experience.’

Preparations for installation began in May. The updates, which will be operational by August, include several high-definition LED video boards and a 360-ribbon display on the upper fascia of the facility, according to the release. SU Assistant Director of Athletic Communications Sue Edson declined to release financial information on the renovations.

Video displays, 21-feet high by 40-feet wide, will be placed above each end zone. Flanking each large board will be two smaller, 12 feet by 10 feet, displays. All Daktronics boards have 20 millimeter pixel spacing and are able to show multiple images in separate windows, allowing them to be used for live action, replays, statistics, graphics and animations, according to the release.

The Dome’s trivision displays, which are located on the sides of the video displays, will be replaced by Daktronics with new 20 millimeter displays measuring more than 9 feet high by 10 feet wide.

‘Both the video displays and the 360 ribbon display uses a type of light-emitting diode called a 3-in-1 surface-mount device,’ Daktronics product marketing manager Marty Brown said in an email to The Daily Orange. ‘It puts the red, green and blue light-producing elements into a single small package about the size of a pencil eraser.

‘This type of LED provides better viewing angles and improved color blending – and it’s only in the last 24 months that surface-mount technology has become viable for displays with greater than 15 mm spacing. Syracuse University has the latest technology out there right now.’

Six smaller boards will be added to the concourse entryways and at the player entrances. A portable truck display will be installed behind sections 123-124 for basketball games as well.

In addition, Syracuse will be upgrading its visuals in its other sporting venues. SU Soccer Stadium will receive a new scoreboard and message display. The Women’s Building, home to the volleyball team, will get a new message display, scoreboard and statistical display. J.S. Coyne Field (field hockey), SU Softball Stadium and Tennity Ice Pavilion will also have new scoreboards installed, according to the release. Edson said all installments will be operations by the start of each respective sport’s season.

Said Gross: ‘The fact that we will have new scoreboards for our Olympic sports, as well, shows our continued commitment to be the best by providing resources that can help our coaches and their programs as they continue to have national success.’
